Introduction

In Deep Work, Cal Newport argues that the ability to concentrate fully on a hard task, without distraction, is becoming rarer and more valuable at the same time. He claims that people who build this ability and put it at the center of their working lives will do well in today's economy.

The book has two parts. Part 1 makes the case that deep work is valuable, rare and meaningful. Part 2 gives four rules: work deeply, embrace boredom, quit social media, and drain the shallows.

  1. 1Deep work is becoming rarer at the same time as it becomes more valuable
  2. 2Deep work lets you learn hard things fast and produce at an elite level
  3. 3Deep work is rare because easy habits have taken over, not because they pay off
  4. 4Deep work also makes work more meaningful
  5. 5Willpower runs out, so choose a depth philosophy that fits your life
  6. 6Rituals, grand gestures and smart collaboration make depth easier to start
  7. 7Run depth like a project, then switch off completely
  8. 8Concentration is a trained skill, so stop running from boredom
  9. 9Judge each online tool by what it does for your most important goals
  10. 10Shrink shallow work: plan your day, protect your hours and be harder to reach
